As the United States marks another celebration of its independence president Donald Trump marks the occasion by passing a massive piece of legislation that promotes the presidents agenda. Members in the House worked tirelessly to ensure that the bill be signed by Independence Day and it seems as if their persistence has paid off. However, the bill has caused some concern with three republicans voting against it.
The bill ensures Trump’s domestic priorities of no tax on tips or overtime, increase funding in defense and Immigration Customs Enforcement or ICE and increase in border protection. This would further enable his policy of issuing mass deportations.
Where we see the most cause for concern is the impact to Medicare and Medicaid — the countries healthcare provider that grants coverage to disabled, low income and elderly individuals. To fund his agenda Trump has slashed massive cuts not only to Medicare and Medicaid, but Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP — the nation’s food stamp program that provides food for millions of America children and adults.
I find it ironic that individuals would tout this legislation as a win or something beautiful when it comes to so many people losing something that should a natural right. Furthermore, this bill underlines where our nation’s priorities are and it’s not for the least fortunate among us.
It’s for the wealthy. It’s for the promotion of fear through massive deportations (some innocent). It’s for ensuring “peace through strength” by increasing funding for our military.
Nobody is denying that the United States has a right to find a means to fix their broken immigration system, or to protect itself to ensure domestic security and tranquility through military strength
What people do deny is losing their social safety nets in favor of protecting the richest amongst us.
One thing is certain, this bill will play a major role in the midterm elections and beyond. The question remains if voters will feel the effects of these changes and if they do will they go against party lines ? Or once again vote against their own interests?
